Director Daniel Chong delivers a witty and lively family animation, co-produced by Pixar veteran Pete Docter and co-written by Jesse Andrews, who could conceivably have provided a good number of jokes and one-liners. In his unassuming, casual way, it discusses environmental protection and playfully riffs on films like Avatar (there's some hilarious pre-release material about it not being like Avatar, but it is, especially in a positive light) as well as Inception, The Lion King, and Dr. Dolittle. It's also about Disney anthropomorphism in general: the great mystery of what it must be like to be an animal and the human desire to communicate and empathize with them.
Mabel, voiced by Piper Curda, is a teenager living with her grandmother (her mother's absence is slightly understated) and learns from this wise elder the importance of loving nature, especially the quiet woodland clearing near their home—and the associated importance of acceptance and forgiveness for people you may not get along with. But when the evil Mayor Jerry (voiced by Jon Hamm) announces his intention to destroy this clearing to make way for a freeway, Mabel realizes that the only way to legally stop him is to repopulate the clearing with beavers and other animals that have mysteriously disappeared.
After uncovering a remarkable conspiracy surrounding what's happening in the sanctuary at her university, Mabel must somehow connect with the animals to convince them that it's in their best interest to do what she wants them to do. She discovers, however, that carnivorous animals can be surprisingly red in their teeth and claws, and that a certain insect queen (voiced by Meryl Streep) is decidedly unsympathetic. The movie may suffer from a lack of courage in how evil to make the villain, but it's very entertaining, and there's a very funny cameo for a shark that remains hostile on land. https://run72.raiselysite.com/2026-usa/
