When you finish your storage space, Google prompts you to buy more and more storage space. If you don’t want to spend money, you can free space by following the methods given. It’s important to note that storage is shared between Google Drive, Gmail & Google Photos. Also, files that are trash and not permanently deleted are part of the storage.
Many of us use cloud storage to save important documents & files. Google you 15GB of free space in Google Drive, and while it is like a lot, there’s a catch. The 15GB space is for files you upload in Drive and Gmail & Google Photos.
These messages & attachments send or received your Gmail account. Also, the photos you upload in real quality in Google Photos share the same storage. Depends on use, 15GB of space could quickly, and you won’t be able to receive emails.
When approaching the 15GB limit in Google Drive, you either purchase Google’s premium plan or clear storage. While the one option costs you money, the 2 one is free & needs only some minutes. Here’s how you clear your Google Drive:
How to review your Google storage
- On your computers, open Google Drive in your browser.
- Go to the settings, and you look for the repository.
- Here you view the storage details & view files taking space from large to small by clicking on the ‘view items taking up storage.’
- Alternatively, you view the cost of storage used on mobile phones by heading over to Google Drive, tap the hamburger icon & go to Settings > Storage.
How to remove files from Google Drive
- After reviewing the files, you select the one you wish to delete & send them all to the trash.
- Head over to trash folders & delete all files to clear up all space.
- The space created from deleted unwanted files reflects within 24 hours.
If most of Drive storage is taken by Photos, you have to manage the Photos app to create more and more space.
Clearing space from Google Photos
- To add additional space on Google Photos, first, you remove all unwanted & duplicate photos.
- Now, you add additional space to drive by changing the upload size of images & videos from ‘real quality to ‘Storage saving quality’ by heading over to settings & tapping on the Backup and Sync > Uploading Size. Note: this is only done for already existing images and videos.
- Now, you go to Settings and tap ‘Recover storage’ to free up the space taken up by real uploads.
- Do not forget to clear all the trash from the folder on Google Photos.

Clearing space from Gmail
- In the search box, write “has: attachment larger:10M” & hit search.
- These will show the emails with over 10MB attachments.
- You review & delete ones you don’t require permanently.
- To delete, select one or more emails & send them to the trash.
- Go to trash folders, & delete the emails permanently.
Follow these all steps will enable you to use Google Drive storage for free, more extended periods.
