HEALTHCARE organizations across the world are struggling with the issue of birth spacing. According to the UN, about 75 million people are added to the world population every year, which will reach 9.2 billion in 2050.
It is the most burning issue for developing countries. They prefer to reduce the fertility rate to ensure the health of the child and the mother.
On the contrary, in Pakistan, the tendency of these organizations is controlling the birth instead of preventing stillbirths and maternal mortality. It has been estimated that the maternal mortality ratio is 276 per 100,000 in Pakistan.
On the other hand, the ratio of maternal mortality in Balochistan is frighteningly high, that is 600 per 100,000 and infant mortality ratio is 128 per 1,000 owing to the low ability of midwives, inadequate support of health services, under-age marriages, and health unconsciousness.
The province, the population of which is roughly more than eight million, is deprived of this health facility. The people of this province are living in far-flung areas where there is a great need for skillful midwives and health services.
According to NGOs, midwives are trained and skilled. On the other hand, midwives seem to be complaining that these training are not satisfactory because of the unavailability of equipped facilities at the time of childbirth.
I request healthcare organizations to work together to provide sufficient maternal facilities and adequate resources.
