One-pieces were back in style yet again, with more of a plunging round U-shaped neck like that of a regular tank top and a high cut V-shaped bottom. Bathing suits like these were solely curated to help highlight a woman’s curves in the best possible way, without shrinking the coverage or lining down.
1994
This is the year when the spotlight shined on the ‘glam’ factor. Stone studded tops, belly chains, and embellished clothes started to steal the show.
While minimalism was still quite the trend at this time, a major part of the masses started gearing towards the ‘glamorous, over the top’ look- even if it was in bikinis.
1995
The “grunge quotes” that you probably google or surf on Tumblr were born in this year. The “grunge” style was brought into the spotlight with more muted, earthy tones (mostly dark). Bandeau tops were the hype paired with oversized bottoms to create a raw, rogue look.
1996
The Salma Hayek swim moment in From Dusk Till Dawn witnessed the advent of padding into swimwear. Padded bikini tops were curated to better highlight the curves of a woman’s upper body, along with high slung bottoms.
The high slung bottoms were gradually on their way to thongs, which is distinct here. The side straps are probably three times thicker than that of a thong’s, but that’s pretty much it.
1997
Solid tricolors were in, along with one-shoulder tops. The above picture shows a model on a runway wearing a tricolor maillot hanging from one shoulder, with a solid print.
This was what you can call the onset of the ‘color-blocked style’ that is popular now. Cutouts were the hype back then.
1998-1999
Polka dots and bobby prints declared their reign in this year, along with ultra-low waistlines.
This low-waisted skirt paired with a padded halter neck top with an elastic finish, imparting reflective properties to it is the style people would die for in the late nineties.
2001
Angelina Jolie vaunts the tomboyish, bold look in a sporty suit and braided hairs. She wears a black swimsuit in Tomb Raider, highlighting the abs that she worked so hard for.
2002-2003
This is when experimentation with color combinations and mismatching came into light. Kate Bosworth’s red boyshorts and black halter neck top was the rave back in those years. This inspired people to experiment with different colors in a fun way, pairing a part of the outfit with the other, and assembling a whole different look. Thanks, Kate!
2004-2005
Jessica Simpson’s teeny stringy halter neck bikini top paired up with cut out denim shorts was ‘the look’ in 2004. Who knew you could go out on a casual drive in just bikini tops and shorts paired with a belt?
2006-2008
Kim Kardashian was shot at a beach wearing a black padded halter neck stringy bikini top outlined with studs paired with a black solid sarong. These years witnessed a swim look which was something between the glamorous, star-studded vibe and minimalistic, sophisticated look. And more than the bikini, we think the trend was set due to Kim, as she doesn’t fail to make style statements even to this date.
