The Philippines will not be pushing through with its plan to open the borders to foreign nationals who are fully vaccinated against COVID-1 on December 1 due to the threat of the highly mutated Omicron variant.

Fourteen countries are now under the country’s red list from November 28 to December 15 following reports of cases of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Malacañang announced Sunday afternoon.

Note-

Israel is to ban foreigners from entering the country for 14 days and use surveillance to halt the spread of the new Covid strain, local media report.

The ban is expected to come into effect at midnight on Sunday, following full cabinet approval.

Israel has so far confirmed one case of the potentially more infectious Omicron strain, first detected in South Africa.

Many countries have since banned travel to South Africa and its neighbors.

What South African doctor said about new variant of COVID-19? 

The first South African doctor to alert the authorities about patients with the omicron variant has told The Telegraph that the symptoms of the new variant are unusual but mild.

Dr Angelique said she was first alerted to the possibility of a new variant when patients in her busy private practice in the capital Pretoria started to come in earlier this month with Covid-19 symptoms that did not make immediate sense.

They included young people of different backgrounds and ethnicities with intense fatigue and a six-year-old child with a very high pulse rate, she said. None suffered from a loss of taste or smell.

As concerns grow with the omicron COVID-19 variant, two of the world's major coronavirus vaccine makers said they'll be able to develop a vaccine to combat the new variant.
