What is the reason? Four killed as rains lash Karachi

Four more people lost their lives as rains lashed Karachi on Saturday under the current monsoon spell. Two of the citizens drowned due to flooding, while the other two were electrocuted. 

Around 40 people, including a couple riding a motorcycle, were trapped on the orange Causeway which was heavily flooded after the downpour on Friday, and swept away by the rainwater, The News reported. 

Upon receiving the information, rescuers from the Foundation started an operation to save the stranded people. According to a spokesperson for the Foundation, some 40 people were rescued through motorboats. 

• A video of stranded people on the orange Causeway also went viral on social media, showing commuters surrounded by rainwater. The rescued people complained that the authorities did not close the road, and they were passing through the ELM Causeway when suddenly a flood arrived and stranded them. A couple on a motorcycle was rescued near the Jam Sadiq Bridge. 

  Later, the traffic going to the causeway was diverted towards the Jam Sadiq Bridge after the ORANGE deputy commissioner ordered the closure of the causeway. 

  In another rain-related incident, a 20-year-old youth, Jonny, fell in Shah Faisal Colony but was rescued safely. However, another young man, who is yet to be identified, presumably drowned after he fell into a drain near stop in the locality. The search for the retrieval of his body is underway. 

  The body of another unidentified man was retrieved from a river in the colony in the area. Rescuers said the man had drowned somewhere else and his body flowed. 

  Meanwhile, a laborer and an unidentified man died of electrocution in town, respectively. 

The laborer, 33-year-old Q urban, son of Seed, died after he suffered electric shocks in the area of Town. He died on the spot. The body was shifted to the Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi. 

Police said the deceased man was working at an under-construction building during the rain when he received electric shocks. 

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted more heavy rains and flash floods in Sindh, Balochistan, and South Punjab from August 14-18 under vigorous monsoon activity. 

In a statement, the Met Office said that a depression has developed in the Arabian Sea, which is likely to move west along the Madras coast. Due to this weather system, monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in southern parts of the country. 

Another low pressure is likely to approach Sindh on August 16. Under the influence of this weather system, rain-wind/thundershower with few heavy falls are expected in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gil git, and Kashmir from August 14-16 with occasional gaps. 

Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are expected in Sindh and Balochistan from August 16-18 with occasional gaps. 

Speaking of the possible impacts, the PMD said that the heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi. 

Flash flooding is expected in Karachi. 

Heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Peshawar,  Faisalabad, Lahore, and Gujranwala from August 14 (night) to August 16. 

The PMD has advised the fishermen to remain more cautious from August 16-18. Travelers and tourists are advised to remain more cautious during the forecast period.
