France and the United States won the first two World Cup matches simultaneously, defeating Mexico 4–1 and Belgium 3–0, respectively. The Frenchman Lucien Laurent scored the first goal in World Cup history. In the United States' 3–0 victory over Paraguay four days later, Bert Patenaude scored the first World Cup hat trick. In the final, Uruguay became the first nation to win a World Cup when it defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of 93,000 people in Montevideo.

France was the defending World Cup champion, making this the first time since the 2002 final that a team made consecutive appearances at the championships and the first time since 1998 that the champion qualified for the following final (both feats were accomplished by Brazil).
