Fatigue and memory issues may not be brought on by a COVID-19 infection top 10

In London, according to a new study, lethargy, headaches, and memory issues—all of which are known to persist after a COVID-19 infection—may be caused by inflammation elsewhere in the body rather than a brain infection by SARS-CoV-2. Early in the epidemic, scientists hypothesised that the neurological symptoms might be caused by an initial infection of the brain. Numerous studies have also suggested that the COVID virus may have an impact on brain symptoms. However, a study conducted by scientists at Germany's Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin has recently produced data in favour of the novel notion. "We also began with that as our hypothesis. However, as of yet, there is no convincing proof that the coronavirus can survive in the brain, much less spread," stated Dr. Helena Radbruch, who leads the working group on chronic neuroinflammation at the Department of Neurological Pathology at Charite. We would've needed to find proof of undamaged viruses in the brain in order to do that. For instance. Rather, the signs that the coronavirus may infect the brain originate from non direct testing techniques, making them inconclusive, said Radbruch.
A second theory states that the neurological symptoms could instead be a byproduct of the body's robust immune defence mechanism against the virus.
The study involved the analysis of several brain regions in twenty-one patients who passed away in hospital settings, usually in an intensive care unit, as a result of a severe coronavirus infection. As a point of comparison, the researchers looked at nine patients who left critical care and later passed away from different causes.

          They started by examining the tissue to determine if it had changed in any noticeable ways and searching for any signs of a coronavirus. Subsequently, a comprehensive examination of both proteins and genes was carried out in order to pinpoint the precise mechanisms that had occurred within individual cells.
Similar to earlier study teams, the Charite scientists discovered that coronavirus genetic material might occasionally be identified in the brain.
However, SARS-CoV-2-infected neurons were not discovered, according to Radbruch. "We believe that the virus entered the body through immune cells, which subsequently made its way to the brain. The virus does not infect brain cells, but they are still harbouring it. Therefore, the brain has not been infected by the coronavirus, but other bodily cells have."

Nevertheless, the scientists discovered startling alterations in certain brain cells of COVID-19-infected individuals' biochemical processes: the cells increased the activity of the antiviral signalling pathway, for instance, which is normally active during a viral infection.One of the study's main scientists, Prof. Christian Conrad, of the University of Berlin Institute of Hygiene at Charite (BIH) and director of the Smarter Imaging working group, stated, "Some neurons obviously react to the infection in other parts of the body.""We may be able to explain the neurological symptoms observed in COVID-19 patients through this chemical response. For instance, weariness may be brought on by neurotransmitters released by these brainstem cells.
