 However, if you do own the business premises, then you need to present the document that proves your ownership. If you rent out the place, you need to present a rent or lease agreement. However, if you neither own nor rent it, you would need to present the consent letter. This consent letter essentially acts as a no-objection certificate that shows that the owner has no objection to the fact that the taxpayer is using the premises for conducting the business.

Who signs the consent letter? As per the rules of the GST, the consent letter is to be signed by the GST officers. Typically, you don’t need to put the consent letter on stamp paper, however, in some cases the GST officer may ask you to put it on stamp paper and also to get it notarized.

What other documents must accompany the consent letter? While uploading the consent letter, you also need to upload the proof of address. This may either be the electricity bill or the municipal data copy. What are the steps for uploading the consent letter? To upload the consent letter successfully, you need to follow these steps:

Go to the GST portal.

Click on Services and navigate to registration and then a new registration.

In, you would need to select ‘Consent’ for the nature of possession field.

 Then upload the consent letter which is signed by the owner.

 You can upload the consent letter either in PDF format or JPEG format. However, do not that the size of the file must not be more than 1 MB.

What happens if you don’t submit a consent letter?
