Membrane is the one which present as first and foremost thing in organism. Same way, endo means within, endomembrane means a membrane within. It is also called as GERL system. Endomembrane plays an important role in cells. Let's look into the topic, endomembrane system.
What is endomembrane system?
The endomembrane system is a collection of membrane based organelles, which work together to create, modify and export products like proteins, lipids. They consist of nuclear envelope, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, also several types of vesicles. The endoplasmic reticulum has two types, one is smooth endoplasmic reticulum and another one is rough endoplasmic reticulum. Rough endoplasmic reticulum consists of ribosomes, which is the reason for rough appearance. Ribosomes are responsible for production of proteins. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes. So, the appearance will with smooth surface. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for detoxification for harmful chemicals. Also, they are responsible for production of lipids which are packaged in vesicles. These vesicles go to the Golgi apparatus. The Golgi apparatus are made up of a series of flattened sacs. The Golgi apparatus is responsible to package and distribute cell products that are either destined for a specific location within the cell. Such as plasma Membrane. Or also for the secretion from the cells. Golgi apparatus works as transport from packaged packages are dropped off, and destination are assigned.
For example, some proteins from the rough endoplasmic reticulum are modified by the Golgi apparatus to become digestive enzymes. Which are packaged into a special type of vesicle, called lysosome. The responsibility of this particular lysosome is to fuse with another vesicle coming in from the plasma membrane. The lysosome digestive enzymes and then break down the contents of the vesicle, releasing nutrients for the cell.
Other cell material leaving the Golgi apparatus may be destined for secretion from the cell. For example, some might ve hormones that help with body regulations. While others might be proteins that become part of the material surrounding the cell. Before these products can be exported from the cell, they must first be packaged into a secretory vesicle. The secretory vesicle then merges with the plasma membrane. Which releases its contents into the external environment.
The endomembrane system can be modified slightly to meet the specific needs of each cell. For example, a muscle cell usually have more rough endoplasmic reticulum because of the need for proteins. Liver cells have more smooth endoplasmic reticulum as the role of liver cells to detoxify. Regardless of these modifications, the movement of material within the endomembrane system is basically the same for all Eukaryotic cells. Function of endomembrane system:
The endomembrane system package, modify, tag and transport lipids as well as proteins to plasma membrane. And the plasma membrane uses those proteins according to the needs of the cell.
Conclusion:
The four main components are Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, lysosomes plays an important role. These are the concepts which must be learned while learning about endomembrane system
