A lot of hype is in the air today about writing as a source of making good money and living a great lifestyle than ever before. It is but natural to think when we see so much writing on the Internet. They all must have been written by some writers. And that said somebody must be hiring writers! And so there must be a great scope of making a great career. But how much truth or myth surrounds this discerning is hardly evaluated by most of the aspirant writers. Dreaming to dream big is welcome, but it absolutely will take one nowhere if one thinks himself/herself big because he or she has been dreaming big. One must face the realities.
Writing is a creative art, and as in any other creative art, there is always glamour and fame attached. Writers are regarded with great awe and respect. They are looked up to as brilliant and wise. Some people fancy such awe and respect and therefore are into writing. Some are into writing because they want fame and glory. Some may have a profound personal story or anecdote from their life’s journey to share. Some may simply be in the need to get something off their system. But a large majority of the aspirant writers today are pursuing remunerative careers with the expectation of making big and quick financial hauls plus name, fame, and a glamorous lifestyle.
Writers come in all shapes and sizes today– some seasoned and some green. Stories about absolute zeroes becoming hero writers abound on the internet which has really been hugely inspiring for the youngsters and then this circulating buzz of making money draws them to weaving dreams of a great career in writing. Look up the various social sites, and you will not take long to notice that there is a huge crowd of young, bubbling, and glamorous young men and women flaunting their success stories as bloggers, content writers, copywriters, and the likes of them.
There are, undoubtedly, numerous financially remunerative writing opportunities on the internet. But one can earn only when their writings sell something or the other. Writings that sell are:
• Content writing: planning, writing, and editing web content, typically for digital marketing purposes e.g., blogs and articles, scripts for videos and podcasts, etc.
• Copywriting: catchy, crispy advertising copies, punch lines, and stories
• Writing reviews: TV shows, films, products, music, fashion items, songs, tourism opportunity reviews, and more

However, if you really enjoy writing, are determined to make a career in online writing to earn money, well, there could be some silver lining on the horizon. One has to be a real good writer. The writings must have to be productive, supporting revenue generation in some way or the other, and hook the browser on the net. Nobody pays for just writing anything that one may will, or write the way one wills. We may have done volumes of writing activities in our school, college, or in our daily lives, but they may not be enough to earn from those experiences. Writing in English and competing with native users of English is also quite daunting.
A professional writer needs a lot of academic and professional grooming. Making a profession out of writing is an entirely different ballgame, requiring skill, versatility, and specialization in some specific genres. Ultimately, writing effectively is fundamental to success: to communicate, educate, convince, and garner support for the cause one is writing for. Our job as a writer is to make it as easy as possible for people to understand your message.
