What is the difference between Digital Communication and Social Media Marketing?

Today, Digital Communication and Social Media Marketing are commonly found everywhere and in every field, starting from the glowing Times Square to a 5 seconds advertisement before a YouTube Video. It is embedded in all the functions of marketing management of national and international companies. In the current era, a good marketer is expected to have command over both areas. The more recent advancement in the field is about fitting the advertisement criteria of what an individual may want based on their related internet searches. Throughout my education in media, culture and identity at the University of Rockhampton, the idea of becoming part of this fast-growing industry has intrigued me.

Nowadays, advertising through social media and digital communication is more manageable in comparison to personal selling or traditional advertising through magazines and television. In my opinion, social media is a modern brain and controlling hub of our lives. It is because it strongly associates the global communities and cultures together.

I have developed a keen interest in digital and visual media 'and' therefore I want to pursue my further studies in Digital Communication and Social Media Marketing course. I thoroughly enjoy my passion for creating blogs, photography and managing social media pages as a medium to communicate my ideas, experiences and opinions. My A-levels and Bachelor in media, culture, and identity allowed me to develop digital media and creativity skills. Moreover, my interest sustained as I became aware of how current and future technologies are able to convey information to people, such as through social media, newspapers and the future development of virtual reality. Within the Bachelors courses, I was also able to show off my creative skills by designing posters, PowerPoints, leaflets and video advertisements for an estate agency through desktop publishing and graphic application software. I have also been a part of the business society at the University of Rockhampton and also performed as a cheerleader. My photography and blogging skills sharpened when I started communicating my thoughts through metaphors. It is now a way of conveying my view effectively to the world.

In University, as a member of a business society, I had to use my persuasive skills and explore ways to market myself through giving speeches, creating propaganda and maintaining a respectful image. Being a part of business society helped me to become a good team leader, by ensuring everyone within the society is actively engaged and involved. These teamwork skills are essential in the marketing industry as in any business working together as a team is necessary to ensure tasks are done promptly and in great quality. I aim to provide a visual and theoretical reference of the subject and connect it to all the other ideas to make people, realize what the true meaning is behind it. Therefore, this is why the visual and digital media master at IE would fit me perfectly and help me develop my creativity in the right field. Other than my creativity skills, my confidence and communication skills are also polished during my academic career, which I believe are crucial in marketing. As constant communication is essential to ensure a good understanding of the consumer is built in addition to the wants of the client, as well as then being able to transform the needs of the client into a successful marketing campaign. Knowing more than one language is considered a competitive advantage among the strong candidates of the industry. Moreover, a strong relationship exists between multilingual advertising content and the likelihood of customer purchase. Being a French native, I am bilingual as I know French since birth whereas I studied in an English high school while living in France. To be an expert in a third language, I am also taking Spanish classes on the side as I aspire to be trilingual. However, first I want to improve my English before initiating my studies in Digital Communication and social media marketing.

My extensive work experience as a Communication and content editor assistant in France 4 Television and as a Digital marketing intern and communication assistant in Pharmacies France has also helped me in developing my interest in the particular field. Skills such as project management, Digital planning, Photoshop, Social Media management, Video montage/creator and Research and analysis of media content are essential in digital marketing and social media business. Outside of work, I enjoy keeping up to date with the world of marketing through business papers such as the Financial Times. I feel this has broadened my knowledge of contemporary issues and debates. Hence, I am passionate to take admission in digital and social media marketing courses Masters Program. It will build a solid foundation for me to pursue my career in Digital Communication and Social media field.
