Today, obesity is called an epidemic in the health community. In fact, it will soon be the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, even ahead of smoking. Obesity leads to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke, and even cancer. Despite all these health risks and the overall improvement in quality of life that can occur, losing weight is one of the best things you can do on your own.
No matter what we want to believe, there is no magic solution to weight loss. The body sheds excess fat when you need more calories to function through the demands you put on it in a day than you give it. So, to lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories and burn more.
When looking for a weight loss program, there are a wide variety of options to choose from. All of them often spend a lot of time explaining what to eat, how much, when, and in what combination. However, few people emphasize the importance of exercise, not only for weight loss, but for your general health and well-being. When trying to lose weight, exercise is essential for several reasons:
First, eating less will slow your metabolism down a bit. Exercise helps return metabolism to efficient levels. Second, as mentioned earlier, exercise burns more calories, so you can lose weight faster and be more motivated to work out. Third, exercise actually releases endorphins, chemicals that make you feel good.
Exercise doesn't have to mean spending hours in the gym or getting nervous with boring workouts. In fact, to stick with it long term, exercise has to be something you enjoy. Start by raising the activity level in a holistic way. If possible, take the stairs. When you go shopping, park further away from the entrance of the mall. Take a walk in your favorite park or neighborhood and take your dog or friends. Take dance and martial arts classes. In general, being active makes the transition to regular exercise easier and more natural. Ultimately, you need to do this to get regular and significant health benefits. Your heart rate should be raised to fat burning levels and maintained at least 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes. However, if you don't want to go to the gym, there are other options. Videos and DVDs are now available for a variety of exercises. That way, you can change your routine whenever you want so you don't get bored of what you're doing. Relax at home and try aerobics, kickboxing, yoga and more.
You can find ways to increase your activity level, even if you have physical limitations that prevent you from exercising. Underwater aerobics is a great option for people with joint problems or limited mobility because it reduces the pressure of weight on the body. But you still resist the water to challenge your muscles. There are also classes and videos where you can exercise while sitting.
No matter what type of exercise you choose, it's important to stay motivated and have fun. Gather groups and make it a social event. Or get a pedometer to track your steps and see how many miles you can walk in a week. Compete with friends and family and treat the winner to a special treat (it has nothing to do with food!). Experience the workout you've been waiting for. Then you will soon be part of a healthy lifestyle.
