Did the Earth always look as it does today?
No, our planet has seen a lot of changes since its beginning, roughly billions of years ago. The initial ball of fire gradually solidified after cooling down. We now understand that the earth's crust is made up of many plates that move continuously. Mountains, islands, and new seas have been created or vanished, and entire continents have been moved. Over time, even the flora and fauna have changed. New species have been found, and many others have gone extinct. The history of the earth is this evolution of the planet through billions of years.
How many plates does the Earth's crust have?
The crust of the earth, which is generally stable, is divided into seven major plates and more than ten smaller ones. Over the heated, viscous layer, which is continually moving, these plates float. Convection cells are the technical term for these heat surges in the planet's interior. The crust frequently splits and forms a new crust where the convection currents are pushing the rocks upward.
Who discovered continental drift?
The German geologist Alfred Wegener is credited with making this discovery. He not only found that the coastlines of South America and Africa contrast very favorably, but he also demonstrated the similarity of the fossils found in the two coastal regions. How were mountains formed?
Mountains can arise in two different ways. The tectonic plates jostle against one another and crash. The Himalayas or the Alps, which are considered among the world's "new" mountains, were produced in this manner about 35 million years ago. How were new seas formed?
Seas arise at places where the earth's crust cracks open due to expansion. Around 200 million years ago, the Atlantic was formed in this way. Today, in East Africa, a crack from Malawi to Ethiopia has developed as a result of the eruption of a volcano. If the soil sinks further, water from the oceans will enter the region to give rise to a water body. This has already happened in the case of the Red Sea, the continuation of the East African rift system. If the plate continues to expand, then at some point in time it breaks completely, giving rise to a long mid-ocean volcanic ridge.
