Delhi on Friday logged 445 fresh COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 2.04 per cent, while no new death was reported due the viral disease, according to data shared by the city health department here. With the new cases, Delhi's COVID-19 tally increased to 19,05,512 while the death toll stands at 26,208, the department said in its latest bulletin. A total of 21,816 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the capital the previous day, it said.
Police waited 48 minutes in school before pursuing shooter
Students trapped inside a classroom with a gunman repeatedly called 911 during this week's attack on a Texas elementary school, including one who pleaded, “Please send the police now,” as nearly 20 officers waited in the hallway for more than 45 minutes, authorities said Friday. The commander at the scene in Uvalde - the school district's police chief - believed that 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos was barricaded inside adjoining classrooms at Robb Elementary School and that children were no longer at risk, Steven McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said at a contentious news conference.
Fuel price hike was necessary to avoid bankruptcy, says Pak PM Shehbaz
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said his government's move to increase fuel prices was necessary to avoid the country from facing bankruptcy. Pakistan on Thursday increased the prices of petroleum products by Rs 30 per litre. Following the hike, price of petrol is now at Rs 179.85, diesel at Rs 174.15, kerosene at Rs 155.95 and light diesel at Rs 148.41. In his first address to the nation after assuming power last month, Shehbaz talked mostly about the domestic problem faced by the government.
Sikkim becomes Covid-free after two years
Sikkim on Friday became a Covid-free state after two years with the last two patients recovering, the Health Department said. The state did not report any new case out of the 84 samples that were tested in the last 24 hours, it said. Sikkim has reported a total of 39,165 COVID-19 cases, and 37,966 patients have recovered thus far, while 747 migrated out of the northeastern state.
OPSC halts recruitment process in varsities after UGC rap
The Odisha Public Service Commission on Friday said it will keep in abeyance the recruitment process of teachers, after the UGC alleged violation of a Supreme Court order on implementation of the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Act 2020. The move comes a day after the UGC, in separate letters to the OPSC and the state's higher education department, said the hiring process of faculty or non-teaching staff in universities should not be conducted for three months in the wake of the apex court order.
Nigeria issues measures to prevent possible spread of monkeypox
The Nigerian government on Friday set up an inter-ministerial committee to prevent the possible spread of the monkeypox disease in the country. There was no recorded case of monkeypox in Nigeria yet, said Mohammad Abubakar, minister of agriculture and rural development, at a news conference in Abuja, the nation's capital, on Friday. Abubakar said his ministry, through the department of veterinary and pest control services, is working assiduously in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and agencies to sensitize the public on the monkeypox virus for early containment.
