Cops make 4th arrest in Noida dowry death case; deceased Nikki Bhati's father-in-law held

The fourth arrest in the Greater Noida dowry death case, in which a woman named Nikki Bhati was set on fire at her in-laws' house on August 21, was made by the Uttar Pradesh police on Monday. Nikki Bhati's brother-in-law, married to her own sister, was arrested earlier on Monday, while two others—her mother-in-law and husband—were held on Sunday and Saturday, respectively.

Vipin Bhati, Nikki Bhati's husband, was apprehended on Saturday after getting hurt in a police encounter. He was accused of killing Nikki Bhati over dowry demands. He was placed in judicial custody for 14 days. Sisters Nikki and Kanchan were married into the same household in Greater Noida's Sirsa in December 2016.

Since the case made the news and was featured in the media, disturbing images and gory details about the murder have surfaced. On August 21, Nikki Bhati, 28, was set on fire at her home because, according to police, she wanted to reopen a beauty parlor she used to run and was having an argument about her Instagram reels. Police interrogated her husband, Vipin Bhati, on Sunday.

According to a previous HT report, the police also stated that Vipin Bhati had "no remorse" for the incident that resulted in her death. The family of the victim, Nikki, claimed that she had been tortured since her marriage in 2016 by them for a dowry demand of ₹36 lakh, even after they had fulfilled their demand for a Scorpio vehicle and a motorcycle.

Videos and testimony from Nikki's son and sister about how the accused husband, Vipin Bhati, and another woman assaulted the victim and dragged her by the hair emerged on social media. A man was seen pouring a thinner liquid on Nikki while she was sitting on the floor in one of the videos. In another, she was shown being brutally assaulted by Vipin. In a third video, Nikki was severely burned and was seen falling down a staircase before she collapsed.
