CM of Tamil Nadu declares ₹6,000 in financial relief for Cyclone Michaung
Cash help would be given at ration shops to those whose livelihoods were impacted by the cyclone.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, unveiled a relief package for cyclones on Saturday. The package includes ₹6,000 in cash aid as well as higher payouts under other categories, such as compensation for crops damaged by flooding.
People whose livelihoods were impacted by the typhoon would get cash help from ration shops, or Public Distribution System outlets, located in their individual residential neighborhoods.
In his correspondence with Union Nirmala Sitharaman he expressed his desire for help for the MSME sector and asked for several measures, including as the availability of an overdraft to offset their losses.
Cyclone "Michaung" caused heavy to extremely heavy rains in Chennai and surrounding areas in Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts on December 3 and 4. This resulted in significant flooding, property damage, and fatalities.
The declaration by the Chief Minister came after a high-level meeting that he chaired at the Secretariat to discuss flood damage and the help that would be given to the affected parties.
Stalin directed that the compensation for crops (33 percent and above) damaged by rain, including paddy, be increased from ₹13,500 per hectare to ₹17,000, according to a news release from the government.
The hectare-by-hectare compensation would increase from ₹18,000 to ₹22,500 if trees and perennial crops were impacted. ₹8,500 per hectare will be the new payout for crops fed by rain, up from ₹7,410.
The amount granted to the relatives of individuals who perished in rain-related situations as a result of the storm will rise from ₹four lakh to ₹five lakh.
The government provided a breakdown of categories of help, such as partial and complete damage, with reference to damage to boats and fishing nets.
It includes raising the maximum subsidy for entirely damaged mechanized boats from ₹five lakh to ₹7.50 lakh.
The compensation for the death of livestock, including bulls and cows, would rise from ₹30,000 to ₹37,500.
The compensation for goat breeds such as "Velladu" and "Semmariadu" has been increased from ₹3,000 to ₹4,000.
The aid for destroyed huts will now be ₹8,000 instead of ₹5,000.
According to the authorities, since the cyclone's beginning on December 8, 47 lakh food packs had been supplied in the Chennai region alone.
51 lakh food packages were distributed to individuals in the districts of Chennai, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur combined. In addition to bread and cookie packs, around 10 lakh bottles of drinking water and more than 58,000 kg of milk powder were provided.
The Chief Minister led a meeting attended by ministers and senior officials.
On December 3 and 4, the storm caused 109.41 cm of rain to fall in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengelpet.
Poonamallee, a suburb of Chennai located in the Tiruvallur district, received 32 cm, while Perungudi also near Chennai received 29 cm.
As a result of the rains and floods, the BJP and the main opposition AIADMK chastised the DMK government for how it handled the crisis. On social media, individuals from a variety of social groups also shared their disappointment and agony.
Chennai Mayor R Priya was encircled by the locals, who bombarded him with inquiries on various topics. Given the correct execution of storm water drain works, the ruling party had promised that there would be no water-logging.
But there was a lot of flooding, and it was impossible to get to places like Pallikaranai, leaving people stranded and houses under several feet of water.
Commercial vehicles, as well as cars and two-wheelers, were flooded. According to thirteen insurance companies, 2,320 claims involving automobiles, trucks, and motorbikes have been received thus far.
For a minimum of two days, there was no milk available, and the city and surrounding areas also had a shortage of drinking water cans.
This is the context for the Chief Minister's declaration of cyclone relief. In spite of the cyclone's enormous rainfall, he had stated on Friday that a huge disaster was only avoided because storm water drain construction was finished before the monsoon season. The central government has approved two installments of ₹450 crore each to Tamil Nadu, but the state administration has requested an interim relief of ₹5,060 crore.
According to the CM's letter to the Union Finance Minister, the continuous rains had destroyed both produced goods and raw materials, bringing over 5,000 MSME units in the four affected districts to a complete halt.
Stalin informed Sitharaman that although the power supply had been restored and the roads had been fixed, it would take time to resume production, as per a government announcement here.
As a result, it stated, he requested that the Center order banks to grant overdraft facilities, extra capital loans, reorganize the payback schedule, and counsel insurance companies to speed up the evaluation and release procedure.
