How did China succeed in controlling Malarial Disease?
Among many other diseases, Malaria has been a contagious disease for a long. It is spread by mosquitoes caused by the bacterium Plasmodium, which is a single-celled bacterium. It is a miracle that illnesses considered incurable until seventy or eighty years ago are now either extinct in the world or have a straightforward cure. The achievements in the medical world are due to modern inventions and discoveries in the health system.
“523 Program” in China:
In the 1950s, hundreds of people died due to Malaria. The Chinese government launched a nationwide program, “523 Program,” based on science to find out means and modes to treat, control, and eradicate the menace of malarial-borne diseases. At the mass level, antimalarial sprays were done, and breeding centers were destroyed in homes and open areas. In 1970, Chine succeeded in finding out and manufacture a very effective antimalarial drug called Artemisinin-based therapies (ATCs), which is considered the most effective antimalarial drug today.
Use of Nets:
Well before the recommendations of WHO, in the 1980s, the Chinese government started the use of net which were infected insecticides (ITNs). Thus, China was the first country in the world to use such nets for the prevention of Malaria extensively. This mass usage of nets in malaria-hit areas proved a successful story and got very positive results. Till the 1990s, the malarial disease ratio decreased to 95%, with mere 2 million cases. With the support of global organizations, China started to strengthen staffing, laboratory equipment, medicines, and techniques. The number of cases reduced to 5000 annually within ten years, which was indeed an outstanding achievement.
Claim for Malaria-Free Certification:
Till 2020, China maintained zero disease report level for four consecutive years and applied for the award of malaria-free certification to the WHO. On this request, a team of members of the Independent Malaria Elimination Certification Panel traveled to China in May 2021 to verify the claim and to study the strategy adopted by the Chinese government in the elimination of the malarial disease. China has been fighting against malarial-borne diseases for the last 70 years.
In the 1940s, 30 million cases of infectious disease were being reported annually in a single year, but today, no cases have been reported in the country for the last four years. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, congratulated the people of China for being declared China a malaria-free country. In 1940, 30 million cases of Malaria were reported in China. At present, 40 countries and regions have been granted malaria-free certification awarded by WHO at the global level.
