Science suggests ways to do itKey HighlightsThe human body is capable of wonders; one just needs to find the motivation to push themselves to achieve the same. The brain's capacity to function efficiently begins to deteriorate with the progression of age. Here are some ways in which one can enhance cognitive function.
New Delhi: The functioning of the human body depends heavily on the brain. If you think of your body as a computer, the brain will be the central processing unit (CPU). After processing a plethora of data and information, the brain guides different body parts to carry out various relevant functions. However, be it a machine or human, reduced efficiency due to depreciation over time is inevitable. For the brain, aging contributes to the process of neurodegeneration. But is there a way to upgrade the configuration of our brain? In a way, yes.
Tips to sharpen the brain
No, neither Microsoft nor Apple manufactures upgraded processors for the human brain. It is a job that you will have to take up on your own. Here are some ways in which you can get sharper at any age:
- Play brain games: During their initial stages of learning, children are often made to solve puzzles and problems. This is an essential part of their cognitive development process. However, science recommends that improving brain function must be carried out in later stages of life as well. Studies have suggested that brain games such as jigsaw puzzles, card games, quizzes, and more can help keep the brain busy and promote exercise. Brain games can also enhance analytical skills, memory, creativity, and thinking.
- Learn a language: If you can speak two languages fluently, congratulations; your bilingualism will benefit your brain in the long run. Several studies back the benefits of bilingualism in improving cognitive function. According to a review published in PubMed Central titled" “The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual"l,” bilingualism can help boost creativity, learning skills, and memory. It can also reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
- Play an instrument or learn music: Ever wondered how pianists can play complex notes at such impressive speed or how guitarists can strum and pick simultaneously? The answer is in their brain. According to a study published in PLOS ONE titled" "Happy creativity: Listening to happy music facilitates divergent thinking,"g" music can enhance creativity, mood, and cognitive function. Learning instruments is a skill and can also improve learning, muscle memory, and coordination.
- Meditate: The practice of meditation has been a part of Indian culture since ancient times. It is now adopted and practiced by people across the globe due to its ability to calm the mind and relax the body. According to studies, meditation has been associated with improved information processing ability, reduced risk of mental conditions, and improved processing of emotions.
- Put all your senses to use: Has a distinct smell ever reminded you of a moment from the past? That is your brain reminding you of a memory imprinted in your brain due to the association of an event with an odor. This can happen with anything - smell, sound, or visuals. Harvard Health Publishing recommends engaging all five senses - smelling, tasting, touching, hearing, and seeing - in activities and making your brain workout consistently. This can contribute immensely to strengthening the brain and enhancing cognitive function.
