A recent study suggests that the inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds may raise the chance of dying over the following ten years.

Balance issues raise the chance of falling, which is concerning because, according to the World Health Organization, falls are the second greatest cause of accidental injury fatalities globally (WHO). Each year, more than 37 million falls cause injuries serious enough to necessitate medical care.

Even for older persons, balance tests are typically excluded from yearly physicals. According to the authors of the current study, this may be due to the absence of standardised assessments and inconsistent findings interpretation.

However, they claim that the inability to balance for 10 seconds on one leg might signify a greater probability of passing away from any reason in the ensuing 10 years.

According to Anat Lubetzky, PT, PhD, CSCS, an associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at New York University, "Balance should be incorporated while evaluating vital signs." It is just one sign among several about a person's overall health.

The study's details

The average age of the 1,702 participants in the new study ranged from 51 to 75. Men made up almost two thirds of the participants.

The test subjects were instructed to balance themselves on one leg. The rear of the lower leg on the other side was supported by the front of the free leg. They were looking straight ahead while keeping their arms at their sides.

Participants were permitted to utilise each leg for up to three tries.

Approximately 20% of individuals, with the number rising with age, were unable to finish the assignment.

  • Participants between the ages of 51 and 55 made up 5% of failures.
  • 8 % of individuals in the 56 to 60 age group failed.
  • 18% of test-takers in the 61 to 65 age group did poorly.
  • Approximately 37% of individuals between the ages of 66 and 70 failed.
  • Participants 71 to 75 years old failed the exam in 54% of cases.

After controlling for factors such as age, gender, and underlying medical disorders, the inability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds was linked to an increased risk of mortality from all causes of 84% over a median follow-up of 7 years.

It's crucial to keep in mind that the study only revealed a correlation, not a cause-and-effect connection, Lubetzky said.

A person in their fifties ought to be able to stand on one leg normally for around 40 seconds. According to Lubetzky, "someone in their 60s is looking at 20 seconds, and someone in their 70s is about 10 seconds." A larger percentage of persons with obesity, cardiac disease, high blood pressure, or unfavourable blood fat profiles were found among those who failed. In this group, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes was three times higher.

What leads to an imbalance?

Balance problems can result from a variety of circumstances.

Dr. Clifford Segil, a neurologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in California, explained that balance can be impacted by spinal stenosis, pinched nerves, or radiculopathies. Long-term alcohol usage can also affect balance because the cerebellar region of the brain shrinks. Issues with the inner ear may also contribute to balance problems that are accompanied by nausea, vertigo, or the sensation that the world is spinning.

Because the most recent study was purely observational, causation and effect were not established.

According to the researchers, the balancing test gives patients and medical practitioners useful information about their mortality risk.

Dr. Adam Rivadeneyra, a primary care sports medicine specialist, told Healthline that although the study didn't establish a clear cause-and-effect connection, it did seem to reveal another potential tool doctors might use to assist counsel patients about their general health. "Similar methods for assessing sleep, walking speed, and falls are beneficial to assist monitor patients," the statement reads.

Additional health signs

A review of research examining the relationship between routine daily jobs and mortality risk was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2010:

  • The incidence of death was 1.67 times higher for the weakest group than the strongest group, according to 14 studies that examined grip strength.
  • Five studies that examined walking speed found that the rate of mortality was 2.87 times higher for the group who walked the slowest.
  • Five studies that looked at how long it took people to get out of a chair discovered that those who waited the longest had a mortality rate that was nearly twice as high as those who did so quickly.

The experts who reviewed the papers did suggest that there may be a connection between these tasks and overall health. People with low health would struggle harder than people with excellent health.

According to Rivadeneyra, it is crucial to spot any health issues that could be impairing balance and address them if feasible. With practise or targeted physical treatment to increase strength, endurance, and coordination, balance can be improved in healthy patients.
