Why people say external peace is impossible without internal peace?

Peace is a universal need. It is well known fact that since ancient time people have been more concerned about peace. The word peace is not only being a pleasant word, but also refers to peaceful society in the whole world. Peace is a lofty and greatest goal that every individual wants to achieve and to establish in society and the world. As far as the people are concerned, they are trying to gain peace. Therefore, the search for peace is seen as an aspect of human history.

Peace has been taught, talked, and thought about in many ways and many aspects. To have a deep understanding of the issue, it is necessary to know its true meaning. Internal peace is the peace that occur within oneself. External peace is enhanced by internal peace. It occurs in society, nations, world, and the environment. This is the peace that we find from outer society. It is a state of peaceful, calm, and happy co-existence of people as well as nature. External peace means the co-existences between all the human beings surrounding us and creating peaceful nature. External peace refers to all the absence of all social violence and the presence of all social virtues.

The answer of whether there can be external peace without internal peace? Is always no. Internal peace and external peace both are interrelated. Those two are interdependent and help, support each other. Internal peace is essential for discovering external peace. That’s why, there is a statement that “external peace cannot be achieved without internal peace”.

The Chinese philosopher LAO TZ U said, “If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations, if there must be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities, if there must be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbors, if there must be peace between neighbors, there must be peace in home, if there must be peace in home, there must be peace in heart”. According to his statement it is very clear that the individual peace is the peace often leads to the society peace. This statement implies that the peace that is found in one’s mind will gradually lead to world peace. One attains inner peace and happiness by fulfilling once needs. Once a person finds the inner peace inside him, he tries to share his happiness and calmness with other persons. This will be the first step in bringing peace to the outside world and will bring about harmony and happiness among the people. When a person suppresses his anger and violence and brings inner peace, he will act peacefully when he's socially active. In this way, social violence and hostilities can be reduced, and external peace can be established. This is the one of the reasons for accepting that inner peace leads to outer peace.

Famous nonviolence activist Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see”. According to his statement, he illustrates that if we want to change the world, we should change ourselves first. It means before we create the world peace, we should make peace within us. We must fulfil our own needs and wants. By fulfilling our own needs, we can achieve real happiness and calm. This might create peace within us. If we have inner peace in our mind we can expand it to our family, society, nature, and world. This happens just like a chain series. Inner peace is the basic thing to create external peace. So, there is a huge correlation between internal and external peace. We can’t achieve external peace without internal peace. So, if we want to change the things in the world, we should change ourselves first. It will create happiness, harmony, calmness, and reconciliation among people.

Everyone knows that inner peace refers to the peace in the individual, while external peace refers to peace in society. A society is formed by the integration of every individual. Therefore, every individual is responsible for every behavior that exists in society. Every kind of hostilities, tensions, violence, injustice, and problems that take place in society are created by individuals. Therefore, in order to resolve the contradictions in the society, each individual must put an end to the problems that exist within him. Thus, social peace automatically arises when everyone brings an end to the problems within them and creates inner peace. It is on this basis that external peace takes root in society.

It is for these reasons that external peace is said to be non-existent without internal peace. Both inner peace and external peace are interrelated and help to create real peace in this world. Only when these two are combined, can bring real happiness, harmony, justice. And well-being. There is no external peace without internal peace.
