Have you found yourself troubled by unsightly rashes and other skin problems? We understand. But are you facing this problem even after having the right skincare routine? If so, then birth control pills could be one of the reasons. Yes, the same contraceptives that are used to prevent pregnancy.

What is the reason behind this?
You may be unaware, but your birth control pill is a mixture of different hormones, including estrogen, progestin, or a combination of both. If you develop a rash, it could be an autoimmune reaction that is most likely caused by a hormone allergy to estrogen or progesterone. Sometimes, even the amount of these hormones can wreak havoc on the health of your skin.
But what kind of skin problems can occur as a result of using contraceptives?
Dr Jayshree Sharad, a celebrity dermatologist, shares it all with Healthshots. “The birth control pills can cause acne. They can also cause hyperpigmentation on the cheeks, a condition known as melasma. Sometimes, it can cause a rash or allergies."
Melasma usually occurs when estrogen and progesterone stimulate cells that contain melanin to produce more pigment when your skin is exposed to the sun.
Some women also suffer from hormonal acne, as the release of progesterone alters the pH of the skin and the sebaceous glands, which often lead to massive breakouts.
“There may be increased arousal in women with existing conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), telangiectasia and porphyria,” says Dr. Sharad.
It can also cause allergies
You may also be allergic to some ingredients in birth control pills, including dyes or other chemicals. If you are allergic to an ingredient, your body triggers an immune response. So, if you see hives or an itchy rash, you know what's causing it.
What is the best way to deal with skin problems caused by contraceptives?
Dr Sharad says: If you suspect that your birth control pill is causing problems, it's time to stop. Be sure to speak with a professional.
Some doctors may recommend allergy tests to find the cause of skin rashes or other problems.
So when you are taking the pill, be a little more careful.
