The CAA seeks to establish muslims as second class citizens of India by providing treatment to other religious groups.This violates the constitution`s article 14 which states the fundamental rights to equality of all people.It is the modified version of the citizenship act of 1955 which gives Indian citizen to immigrants from within the three neighbouring countries i.e Afghanistan,Pakistan and Bangladesh belonging to the six religious communities-hindus,christians,parsis,zains,sikh and buddhist.and is elligible only for those immigrants who have resided in India on or before 31st december,2014.The negative part of this bill is that it does not mention the muslims community and can be described as an unconstitutional act from the fact that it violate many laws of the constitution of India.Due to this unconstitutional act many social activist and protestors had protested vigilantly against this act.On 28th december,according to the Indian express,they reported that 19 people were killed and 1246 people were arrested on 372 FIRs lodged in the state of India`s capital New Delhi.Uttar pradesh was the worst affected state with the biggest police breakdown.
This act reduced the years required for the naturalization process for becoming an Indian citizen from 12 years to just 5 years only.
In the north-eastern parts of India,mainly the sixth scheduled areas won`t be totally effected by it.But some parts in the northeast especially Assam where the sixth scheduled areas is not prevalent might suffer heavily from it.The protest stems from the fear that illegal bengali hindu migrants from Bangladesh,after their registration in India will threaten the culture and linguistic identities of the state.It is mainly because the protestors in the Northeast and protestors in other parts of India are different.They don`t want any refugee or immigrants to be granted the Indian citizenship,regardless of their religion as they fear that it would alter their region`s demographic balance resulting in loss of their political rights,culture and land,which violates the Assam accord,which was a prior agreement with the central government on immigrants and refugees.
