We all know a vessel. You know, that one guy threatening to take down your organization using every lousy strategy in the book to advance his career, regardless of how it affects others. Warriors, Workers, Whiners, and Weasels: The 4 Personality Types in Business and How to Manage Your Advantage by Entrepreneur Tim O'Leary takes a fresh look at the different personalities we encounter and how to handle them.
What the book means is that essentially everyone fits into one of four personality groups—warriors, workers, whiners, or weasels. O'Leary defines each as the following:
Warriors who face change, see possibilities, innovate and manage to win!
Workers who reliably deal with the ups and downs and challenges of everyday corporate life, and who can reliably implement the change and direction established by the Warriors.
Whiners, who move ahead in life by complaining about everything they do, who claim negativity and resentment wherever they go, blame others for their shortcomings.
Vessels that lurk everywhere and threaten your career and life goals with their own deceit and securities and that spread these sentiments rapidly throughout the organization.
The book is designed to help you identify which group you fit into, give you the tools you need to reach the group you want to be in, and deal effectively with the people in each group. Learn how to. The book really does a great job of forcing you to analyze yourself truthfully. O'Leary warns you may not like what you find, but it also strongly indicates that you are in control and that you can make changes in your life to fit into the group that is You wish.
Even more interesting (and fun) is to imagine people you know and put them in their appropriate categories. We have all encountered a whiner or weasel and it helps to know what makes them tick and how to deal with them effectively so that they don't negatively affect your life. O'Leary uses an analogy to the common cold—you can't eliminate weasels from your life completely, but you can take care to limit the frequency in which they enter your life. They are part of the damage caused. ,
O'Leary uses light-hearted humor mixed with an intensely intense attitude to combine a business book and a self-help book in an exciting fashion. One chapter may focus on self-analysis, the next may be about personal stories from O'Leary's experiences, and the next may be about management. The book is over 200 pages, but at half the speed of a book. I often found myself reading several chapters in one sitting, which is a testament to the authors' ability to maintain readers' interest. If there's one downside (and it's not more than one), it's that O'Leary is so brutally honest that it can get some people wrong, especially those who fall into the whiner and weasel groups.
