“If you look for it, I have a sneaky feeling that you’ll find that love actually is, all around.” is a line everyone must have heard of at least once in their life. If you are an avid rom-com watcher, that line is scratched into your brain.
With Valentine's Day just gone, either you’re in a happy relationship where you will be surrounded by too much love, or you’re in a position where you need to watch a ridiculous amount of romantic comedy movies to remind yourself that love is, actually, all around. I guess you might also be interested in watching one of these rom-coms with your significant other, but these recommendations are mostly for my single friends. From the perspective of someone that has enjoyed these films an unhealthy amount of times, here are my top recommendations for romantic comedies and why they are guaranteed to make you feel happy this Valentine’s month whether you are in an annoyingly happy relationship (no offense!), or alone.
Based on the books by Helen Fielding, main character Bridget Jones is a messy, awkward and loveable hopeless romantic that is incredibly relatable. These films have a heartfelt charm that couldn’t have been written better. They strike the perfect balance between being hilarious and having genuine emotional depth. The iconic love triangle between Bridget, Mr. Darcy and Daniel Cleaver creates the perfect tension. Mr. Darcy’s safe and calming attractiveness and Cleaver’s annoying bad guy charm makes this love triangle both highly entertaining and relatable. Honorable mention to the 2000s rom-com’s indispensable faces: Hugh Grant and Colin Firth’s appealing charm make the film even better. It’s the perfect film to grab some wine, sit with your galentines and enjoy. With the fourth film just out, it might be the perfect time to sit down and watch the first three before you watch the new one.
My love for Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik might make me biased, but I believe that this film was the reason I came to love them in the first place, so maybe not. It’s the perfect romantic comedy for teenagers. Kat Stratford is a witty, smart, badass character that might’ve been idolised by every young girl ever; and her sister Bianca is not allowed to have a boyfriend before Kat does due to their house rules. So Bianca pulls some strings, leading to the handsome Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to cross paths with her. Their flirty arguments, Kat’s resistance and Patrick’s charm makes their relationship perfect. Alongside their storyline we follow Bianca and Cameron. Cameron learns French for Bianca just to tutor her and spend time with her which is possibly the most romantic gesture ever. The iconic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” rendition by Heath Ledger is a moment everyone needs to enjoy, especially perfect for Valentine’s.
The plot of 27 Dresses follows Jane, a woman who cannot say no to her friends – leading to her being a bridesmaid 27 times and planning 27 weddings selflessly. But she has wedding dreams of her own, and her ideal groom is her boss, George. Jane has feelings for George, but George is completely unaware. Jane meets a journalist called Kevin, who becomes aware of Jane’s obsession with wedding planning, and sees the story as newsworthy. The worst, and perhaps the best part of this film is that Jane has to watch George fall for her sister…And having to plan their wedding. With all the wedding planning and Jane’s hopeless romanticism, this rom-com is the perfect watch for someone who enjoys unexpected romances, and watching Jane find herself in the worst possible situations is as entertaining as it can get.
