Greek mythology is the collection of tales about the gods, heroes, and rites practiced by the ancient Greeks. The most critical Greeks, like the philosopher Plato in the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, acknowledged that the stories contained a sizeable amount of falsehood. The Greeks' widespread religiosity, however, often accepted the tales as historical records. The arts and literature of Western civilization, which was the inheritor of a great deal of Greek culture, have since been greatly influenced by Greek mythology.
