In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Sir Francis Bacon was a prominent English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author. He is most known for supporting rationalism and empiricism and for helping to build the idea of induction through the scientific process. He was also an accomplished author, politician, and lawyer. The Progress of Learning, Novum Organum, and The New Atlantis are just a few of the notable books he produced. He contributed significantly to the growth of contemporary scientific ideas and helped to establish empirical philosophy. His aphorisms, such as "Knowledge is power," are well remembered. 1626 saw his death.
