The Ukrainian Crisis is an ongoing dispute between Russia and Ukraine that began when the Ukrainian government sought to move closer to Western institutions in 2013. Coinciding with this, Russia wanted to assert more control over its former Soviet Republics. This raised tensions between the two countries and resulted in the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.
Russia is viewed as an aggressor by many Western observers, but most Russians feel they are protecting their interests against encroaching NATO forces. The conflict has not ended with Crimea's annexation, but no one knows what will happen next.
