A study has shown that a man paralyzed under the neck can visualize writing using his hand and use artificial intelligence software to convert his intellectual handwriting into words at a speed equal to typing on a cellphone. Brain-computer interfaces, which allow users to factor and click keyboard keys simultaneously, have been developed to help people with disabilities communicate. The study found that a 65-year-old volunteer with a mind-computer connection could write up to 90 characters per minute using "mindwriting." This is similar to the 115 characters that friends of the volunteer's age, who are not impaired, normally write using a smartphone. The spinal cord injury that caused the subject's paralysis occurred in 2007, and two brain-laptop interface French fries were surgically inserted into the left side of the subject's brain in 2016. The researchers observed the volunteer write sentences as he imagined holding a pen on a notepad and analyzed his hand and finger movements. The new interface works better than previous ones because the mind impulses for each letter are very different from each other. The researchers plan to simplify the device and work with a mute and paralyzed character in the future, hoping to benefit tens of millions of people in similar conditions.
