The Marburg virus is a highly infectious disease that belongs to the family of viruses known as Filoviridae, the same family as Ebola. Like Ebola, the Marburg virus can cause severe hemorrhagic fever and has a high mortality rate. The virus is named after the German city of Marburg, where it was first identified in 1967. Since then, there have been several outbreaks of the disease in Africa, most recently in Guinea, where it was first reported in August 2021.
