Predicting the future is difficult and risky. Predicting the future of the computing industry has become more difficult and risky due to the dramatic changes in technology and the limitless challenges to innovation. Only a small percentage of innovations truly disrupt existing technologies. Some are not practical or cost-effective, some are ahead of their time, and some have no market at all. There are many examples of great technologies never being adopted because other technologies arrived on time or performed better in the market. Therefore, this document is just an attempt to better understand where the technology is headed. The process of innovation and disruption is best described in The Innovator's Dilemma and its sequel. In 2014, a technical leadership team from the IEEE Computer Society teamed up to author a technical report called IEEE CS 2022, investigating 23 technologies that could change the landscape of computer science and industry by 2022. In particular, this report focuses on 3D printing, big data and analytics, the open intellectual property movement, massive online open courses, cross-cutting issues in security, general memory, 3D integrated circuits, photonics, cloud computing, computational biology, and bioinformatics Science, Devices and Nanotechnology, Sustainability, High Performance Computing, Internet of Things, Life Sciences, Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems, Natural User Interfaces, Networking and Interconnection, Quantum Computing, Software Defined Networking, Multicore and Medical Robotics.
