The historical origins of the word Viking are dubious. Many assumptions are almost their beginnings. The Old Norse word víkingr usually meant "pirate" or "raider". It was in use from the 12th to the 14th centuries and has been traced back to the modern word from earlier Old Scandinavians to the Vikings themselves.
