A child is considered underweight if their weight falls inside the lowest 5th percentile for their height. We clinically classify a child as being underweight based on their height as well as how they compare to other kids their age.
Weight to length measurements are used to monitor children from birth to age 2 by doctors and nutritionists.
After age 2, we look at weight, height for Disease Control growth charts. In this age group, the growth measures a child's weight in relation to their height. A child is underweight if their growth falls below the fifth percentile for their age.
