The gut microorganisms, also referred to as the human gut microbiome, is a tremendous system of microorganisms found in the human gut, which plays a vital role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and maintenance of the immune system. Healthy microflora is thought to play a significant role in general health, and disproportionate microbiome, or dysbiosis, has been linked to numerous health complaints, such as digestive disorders and neurological and metabolic illnesses and cancer.
Recent data show that intestinal microbes are able to influence cancer development and progression, and response to treatment, including immunotherapy. As an illustration, antibiotics can accidentally interfere with good gut bacteria and this can cause a reduced number of successes in cancer treatment and increase the number of side effects. Dietary treatments, such as a high-fiber, plant-based diet, on the other hand, have shown a promising capacity to keep the microbiome of the gut healthy and have been shown to improve treatment outcomes.
The gut microbiome diversity and balance through proper nutrition and lifestyle, can therefore help prevent diseases besides enhancing efficacy of cancer treatment.
