Cooper notes that the Greeks did not genuinely have "art" when Plato spoke about the impacts of culture:
We may find it astounding that the Greeks, who were known for their artistic sensibilities, had no word even vaguely similar to our term "art." The closest was techne, but this encompassed many other trades and abilities as well, such as soldiering and riding (Cooper, 1997, p. 9).
