Climate change, as it is commonly understood, is the continual rise in the average global temperature and its effects on the planet's climate system. In a broader sense, climate change also refers to past, significant shifts in Earth's climate. The use of fossil fuels by humans is the main factor contributing to the present, more rapid rise in world average temperature. The use of fossil fuels, deforestation, and various industrial and agricultural practices all result in an increase in greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide and methane. Once the Earth warms from sunlight, greenhouse gases absorb some of the heat that it radiates. Increased concentrations of these gases warm the planet's lower atmosphere by trapping more heat there.
