Microbial pigment production has in potential use in various industries. The bacterium Serratia marscescens produces a natural red pigment known as prodigiosin has been used to dye the fabrics naturally. The red pigment producing microorganism was isolated from the soil samples .The pigment was appear at the later stages of the bacterial growth. The crude extract of pigment was purified by thin layer chromatography. The pigment prodigiosin shows a wide range of biological properties such as anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti material, anti oxidant, anti proliferative, immune suppressive and anti cancer properties. Instead of these properties, now a days the pigment prodigiosin has been used as dyes for textiles.
