he Indian rupee symbol (₹) was officially adopted by the Government of India on July 15, 2010. The symbol is derived from the Devanagari script letter "र" (ra) with an additional horizontal line, which gives it a distinctive and recognizable appearance. The design of the symbol was selected through a competition organized by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The winning entry was created by D. Udaya Kumar, a design student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The symbol is intended to represent the Indian currency and is used on coins, banknotes, and in financial contexts to denote amounts in Indian rupees. It provides a unique and graphical identity to the Indian currency, similar to other currency symbols like the dollar sign ($) or the euro symbol (€).
