Ranking the world's greatest contemporary scientists could also be a no-win proposition, with inevitable questions on the way to evaluate one's contribution over another. How does a discovery in one field qualify to discovery during a different one? And what about Richard Dawkins? Where is he on this list? All reasonable questions, but ultimately we'd like to start the discussion somewhere. So here's a debatable list of top five scientists from around the world who have made an excellent impact on our life (but not so as of the magnitude of their achievements because that could be an unscientific exercise):
