This article's first starting point is a form of paradox or contradiction. People are typically very good at distinguishing between story, drama, and games outside of the realm of academic theory. I don't expect you to drop the ball I throw at you and wait for it to start telling you stories. However, whenever video games, particularly computer games, are examined and theorised, the fields of literature, theatrical, drama, and film studies are virtually always colonised. Games are viewed as procedural storytelling, interactive narratives, or remastered movies (1). In addition to all of this, such definitions are conceptually weak and ill-founded because they are typically generated from a very small body of research, despite being successful in terms of financing or influence.
