Although "technology" is one of the most used terms in our society, it is also one of the most ambiguous. It appears to be an analytical category that is essential to our comprehension of human history as a whole and even beyond. It is probably safe to say that humans have been using technology since the Palaeolithic, and a variety of animals, including chimpanzees and crows, have even been shown to use tools. While terms like "techne," "arts," and so forth have a much longer history, "technology" as an actor's category is surprisingly new. Even so, the English word "technology" has only recently come to encompass a variety of frequently contradictory meanings. I have three objectives for this essay review.
