India's Avinash Sable put up a remarkable effort as he clinched a Gold Medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sunday. He took top honors with a timing of 8:19:50s, breaking the Games record along the way.
Sable provided India a 12th Gold in the ongoing continental meet and the first track and field gold in Hangzhou.
Sable was seen far ahead of his fellow runners as none of them were visible in the frame when he crossed the finish line in first position.
Ryoma Aoki and Seiya Sunada settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Sable kept his calm and went on to build a fair amount of distance between himself and the rest of the field and won the race by a massive distance.
Sable, a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, holds the national record of 8 minutes 11.20 seconds. His season’s best time is 8:11.63, placing him in second position among Asians behind Miura Ryuji (SB: 8:09.91) of Japan.
Sable's dedication and hard work paid off as he hit the headlines for setting the national record for the ninth time. Notably, he also holds the national record for the 5000m race with a time of 13:19.30s.
In Hangzhou, besides the 3000m steeplechase, his main event, Sable will also compete in the 5000m race.
Sable had missed out on the qualification for the 2018 Asian Games as he faced numerous challenges including an ankle injury.
He continued to work hard and bounced back from his injury to break a 30-year national record at the 2018 Open Nationals in Bhubaneswar.
He extended his achievements beyond one event, having recorded the national record in a half marathon with a timing of 1:00:30s at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020, making him the only Indian to date to finish half a marathon in less than 61 minutes. In the final 50m, Sable turned around to see no one close to him as he approached the end and celebrated as he crossed the finish line.
In Hangzhou, besides the 3000m steeplechase, his pet event, Sable will also compete in the 5000m race.
