Asian Games 2022: 40 sports to play up, How Cricket to be following after 11 years

The 2022 Asian games will take place from September 10 to September 25, 2022, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China and there will be five co-host cities.

The Athletic event will feature 40 sports with a total of 61 disciplines, including Olympic sports like swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, equestrian, fencing, football, hockey, judo and much more. 

E-sports and breakdancing will make their debuts in the 2022 Asian Games as full medal sports after being approved by the Olympic Council of Asia this year, while Cricket will be back at Asian Games in T20 format to raise the excitement of the viewers. 

Cricket will be a part of the 2022 Asian Games will take place from September 10 to September 25, 2022, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. The sport makes its return to the Asian Games roster after 8 years and will be one among the 40 sports that will be played. Cricket was last played at the 2014 Asian Games. 

India is a member of the South Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia and one of the seven countries that have competed in all the editions of the Asian Games.  Except in the 1990 edition, India has won at least one gold medal at every Asian Games and always ranked within the top 10 nations of the medal table, This association will give SPN exclusive rights to broadcast the 19th edition of the Asian Games on its sports channels across India and the subcontinent including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and the Maldives. 

So far, India has won 139 gold, 178 silver, and 299 bronze medals at the Asian Games and will look to significantly increase the medal tally this year. In this year of the Asian games, for the first time ever, more than 300 athletes from Oceania countries have been given the chance to compete. From Australia and New Zealand, the Oceania athletes, will be allowed to compete in five sports: triathlon, athletics, roller skating, and weightlifting. Sony Pictures Networks, India, has acquired the exclusive rights for the 2022 Asian Games from November 2021 to September 2023.

This association will give Sony Pictures Networks exclusive rights to broadcast the 19th edition of the Asian Games on its sports channels across India and the subcontinent including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

Different selection trials dates will allow boxers to change weight categories and present their challenge for Asian Games as well.

“This format will give boxers, whose category is not part of Asia, big relief as they still can participate in both the events with different weight divisions,” said Kali ta.

Kali ta also confirmed that the Asian Games selection trials for men will be held in May while, for the Commonwealth Games, trials for both men and women will be conducted in June. 

“BFI is committed to give each and every boxer an equal opportunity, and the upcoming selection trials will be no different. There will be a transparent approach to select the best boxers to represent the country,” said Kali ta.

The women’s world championship is scheduled from May 6 to 21 in Istanbul, Turkey, while the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games will begin on July 28 and September 10 respectively.
