A recent online leak revealed that the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is developing its AR glasses that are expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2024. Now a new report has surfaced online revealing that the upcoming Apple MR Headset may be powered by the flagship M2 processor of the company. New details about it are beginning to emerge as Bloomberg revealed in its latest report that the gadget would feature the new M2 processor in the base variant with a 16 GB RAM. The M2 chipset that was launched last month at the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) 2022 features redesigned central processing units and increased memory capacity. The company claims that these improvements will give a boost to the performance of Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset. Earlier, TFS Securities analyst Ming-Chi Quo suggests that the headset would contain a dual-processor setup containing a single chip which will be similar in capabilities to M1 with a less powerful secondary processor, which processes data from various sensors inside the device. These rumors were recently brewed by Apple boss Tim Cook, who told China Daily that he was very excited about the opportunities offered by augmented and virtual reality, adding that we will soon find out what Apple will offer in this regard. In any case, it seems that Apple MR Headset is already deep in development, and M2 should be in charge of its drive because we doubt that Apple could install older or weaker processors if it wants to attack the top of the high-end offer, reports Vid. According to a note published on Medium, Quo mentioned that Apple MR Headset may likely launch in January in order to favor the “continued rapid growth” of the headset market. He also added that the company will launch the headset at a special launch event. In addition, Quo said in the note, “The launch of Apple AR/ MR will further boost the demand for immersive gaming/ multimedia entertainment”. As the months have rolled on, Apple’s headset has never seemed to move closer over the horizon. That’s probably to be expected with a product as ambitious as a mixed-reality headset, but it means we shouldn’t expect it any time soon. Apple’s Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June 2022 was offered up by many leakers and analysts as a possible announcement date, if not with a full-blown product reveal, then perhaps a sneak peek. Yet WWDC came and went with not so much as a slight hint from Apple as to the headset’s existence. However, there are hints to its existence in Apple’s software. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gorman, for example, noted in his Power On newsletter in April 2022 that beta versions of the upcoming iOS 16 operating system were “chock-full of references to the headset and its interactions with the iPhone.” That suggests the headset is not a million miles away from a release date. Gorman reported in May 2023 that Apple had shown a prototype of the device to the company board, and that it was targeting a launch in late 2022 or early 2023. That is later than Gorman’s earlier predictions, but the impact of the coronavirus and lockdowns in Apple’s supply chain has probably pushed things back.
