System on Chip, popularly known as 'SoC', refers to the entire embedded system on a single chip. It is one of the technologies in the semiconductor industry. SoC is nothing but the integration of all computer or electronic components that are fabricated on a single tiny IC (Integrated Chip). In the area of SoCs, there is a term related to the SoC called a manufacturing process. The value is stated in nanometres (nm). In general, the smaller the size in nm, the more compact the internal SoC components are.
An SoC enables you to combine all these components on just a single tiny chip, compress it down to the size that fits in your palm, and keep it within as a real, functioning system for the mobile device. Over 40 years after the invention of the system on chip, designers are now focused on miniaturising and integrating multiple components on a single chip. SoCs are pre-assembled, pre-tested building components obtained from internal or external sources and assembled on a single chip. These blocks are commonly referred to as intellectual property (IP) blocks, IP cores, or virtual modules.
SoCs are extensively used in embedded system applications. The top manufacturers of SoC technology are STMicroelectronics, TSMC Limited, Broadcom, Qualcomm, NXP Semiconductors, and so on.Design, verification, and testing are among a few of the many phases that involve making a system-on-a-chip (SoC), all of which are essential to achieving a dependable and ideal outcome.
Components of SoC
A System on a Chip (SoC) is a hybrid device that combines analog and wireless components with standard digital components like the processor, memory, and bus. The SoC comprises memory, a CPU (Central Processing Unit), input and output ports, a digital signal processor (DSP), a graphical processing unit (GPU), a control unit, and peripheral interfaces. The processing unit (processor) functions as the chip's "brain," responsible for processing instructions and carrying out calculations. The processor can be a DSP, a microcontroller, or a microprocessor, but mostly DSP is used as a processor. SoCs are usually multicore. The chip needs to have a memory that enables it to execute calculations. It might include RAM, ROM, and EEPROM, as well as flash memory.
A chip built for digital signal processing is called a digital signal processor (DSP). This involves data processing, data analysis, actuator, and sensor tasks. Image decoding is one application for it. Performance is improved through the use of DSP, which conserves CPU cycles for other computational tasks. A Graphical Processing Unit, or GPU, is an SoC component that displays interfaces. The purpose of the GPU is to accelerate image computing tasks. Another is the timing unit of the SoC, which is of two types: PLLs and oscillators. Peripheral interfaces (devices) are those that have external connections, such as USB, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Several functions are carried out by this component in the SoC.
