Acne!!!! Top 10 FAQ

1  Can you get (catch) acne from other people?

Answer: While some types of acne contain a bacterium, it is located in the hair follicles under your skin and cannot be transmitted through contact. So no, touching or kissing someone with acne will not give you acne.

2  If both my parents had acne, does it mean that I will get acne?

Answer: Studies show that heredity plays an important role in determining who develops acne. Therefore, children of parents who have had acne or who have had acne are at higher risk than others. It should be noted that just because you have a family history with any disease does not guarantee that you will get it; there’s only a very good chance you don't have any family history.

3  Does eating or drinking certain foods cause acne?

Answer: Studies over the years have suggested that everything from chocolate, candy, fried foods, sugar, drinking water, orange juice to milk can make you get acne or worsen existing acne. However, they have no scientific evidence to support any such results. There are so many factors influencing the development of acne that it is very difficult to isolate a single cause. So whether or not to avoid certain foods or drinks is really just a personal preference. If you find that your skin reacts negatively to certain foods, do not eat or drink it.

4   Does the dirt on my skin cause acne?

Answer: Keeping proper hygiene will help in healthy skin. Although dirt will not cause acne on the skin, anyone with acne should be extra vigilant in a good cleansing routine. Over-washing can irritate your skin and make it more vulnerable to infection. Washing with a gentle cleanser will help reduce the buildup of skin cells and keep your skin looking its best. So find a balance and try not to wash too much.

 5   Does stress cause acne?

Answer: Stress has been shown to make acne worse, not directly cause it. So if you suffer from acne, you need to be aware of how you react to stress and develop ways to help manage and keep it under control. This will not only help in controlling your acne but, will also benefit your overall health.

6   Can you develop acne after you're out of adolescence?

Answer: The simple answer is yes. In fact many people who never experienced acne as a teenager may develop it in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

7  Does makeup or sunscreen make acne worse?

Answer: Some products which are excessively greasy and rough can clog the skin pores leading to acne. Not all products affect everyone equally, so when you develop acne by using one product no one else can. If you are prone to acne, you will need to be extra careful with "what you put on your skin". Always try to use oil-free products and test a small amount on a patch of skin for a few days before using it completely.

8   Will exercising affect my acne?

Answer: Although it's still not clear why this happens, vigorous exercise that causes your body to heat up and sweat appears to make acne worse for some people. One theory is that exercise increases the production of sebum, the oil that when produced in excess can cause acne.

9   Can facial help with acne?

Answer: There is no easy way to answer this question. The term facial is used to describe everything from an over the counter product you buy from the drugstore and do it yourself to something done at an expensive spa for hundreds of dollars. The bottom line is that anything that can irritate your skin can make your acne worse.

10   Why does my acne stop on my current treatment?

Answer: Acne medicine, like all medicines, can become less effective over time as your body builds up a resistance to them. It may be necessary to use an acne treatment regimen on a rotational basis for optimum effectiveness.
