Abraham Lincoln: He was the 16th president of the U.S.A. From utter poverty, he Rose to the heights of eminence and left his name on the pages of history. For his sound views, strong character and love for humanity, he is respected all over the world.
Abraham Lincoln was born in the state of Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. His father, Thomas lincoln, was an ordinary farmer. He was inclined to live a roving life, and as such he shifted to the new state of Indiana. Abraham Lincoln was very hard working even in his childhood. When he was a child of six years, he started helping his parents. He caught fish, fetched water, cut wood with a small axe and gathered sticks for fire. In Indiana, he helped his father to build a new home for the family. When he was eight, his father taught him shooting. He felt happy to shoot down wild animals.
Abe's mother read the holy Bible every Sunday and sometimes on other days. So one of the pleasure of those early days was hearing his mother. The Bible was his first story-books. Later on, his father brought some more story-books for him to read. He learnt a lot from three books: pilgrim's progress, Aesop's Fables, Roinson Crusoe. These books opened a new world for him. His mother died when he was a small boy. The household work had to be done by his sister Sarah who was of eleven years at that time. Lincoln was of great help to her. After some time, his father married again. Fortunately, the stepmother brought comfort with her. She was very kind to Abe and his sister. She insisted on his going to school, she saw that Abe dressed properly and not in any odd clothes. The old schoolmaster thought him a very intelligent boy. He taught him how to behave like a gentleman. Abe grew up to be a tall boy of six feet at the age of sixteen.
When Abe became a man, he earned his living in avariety of ways. He worked as a store-keeper, a postmaster, a surveyor and as a boatman at different times. He was popular with many people. When he was 25, his neighbours elected him to a term in the Illinois legislature. He then read law and was admitted to the Bar , at the age of 28. His power of lucid agrument and his speeches against salavery made him so popular that he was chosen President of the U.S.A in 1861. The sirithern states chosen their own president. A civil war brke out, which was fought for four years, from 1861 to 1865. Lincoln's force won and he was able to keep his country United. But soon after, in a theatre he was shot dead by a mad man.
We can look upon Abraham Lincoln as real hero. A hero is a brave man of qualities, respect by all.And Lincoln was such a man. He fought his way through poverty and became the president of the U.S.A. With little formal education, he became one of his country's greatest orators. He fought a civil war for four years and saved his country from going to pieces.
