The biochemical and physiological process through which an organism uses food to sustain itself is known as nutrition. It gives organisms nutrients that they can digest to produce chemical structures and energy. Malnutrition results from insufficient dietary intake. The study of nutrition is known as nutritional science, however it usually focuses on human nutrition.
What nutrients a creature requires and how it gets them depends on its type. In order to receive nutrients, organisms can either absorb light, consume inorganic or organic substances, or a mix of these. While some can receive pre-existing nutrients by digesting fundamental components, others need to consume other species in order to manufacture nutrients inside. In addition to numerous additional chemicals, carbon, energy, and water are necessary for all living beings. Animals must consume other species in order to receive complex nutrients like proteins, lipids, and carbs. To improve human nutrition and replace foraging, humans invented agriculture and cooking. Nutrients are obtained by plants from the soil and atmosphere. Nutrients in their environment are broken down and absorbed by fungi through their mycelium.
Substances known as nutrients give an organism the energy and physical components it needs to live, grow, and reproduce. Complex macromolecules or simple components can be considered nutrients. Organic matter contains about thirty elements, the most significant of which are nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus.[5] Micronutrients are substances that an organism needs in trace levels, whereas macronutrients are the main substances needed by an organism. Minerals are the category for inorganic micronutrients, and vitamins are the category for organic micronutrients.[6]
The cells take up nutrients and employ them in metabolic biochemical processes. These include biosynthetic reactions that transform precursor metabolites into building block molecules, polymerizations that unite these molecules into macromolecule polymers, and assembly reactions that employ these polymers to provide energy.
