Whether your weight is good or you are trying to reach your weight goal, is simply a matter of burning more calories than you earn? Answer, I suggest, no! Overall physical fitness and weight gain or weight loss should be included in the equation, or you may be headed for problems. Proper nutrition can help reduce the risk of many health problems, the most frightening of which are heart disease and cancer. A healthy diet, however, includes eating a wide variety of foods, monitoring your intake of food and drink, and counting calories. Healthy eating provides nutritious foods that lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and help control weight. To be effective, your body must have the right combination of nutrients: Carbohydrates. They are the main source of grains in your diet. The body uses carbohydrates to create glucose that can be used immediately or stored in your body over time. Too much glucose, however, is stored as fat. There are two types of carbohydrates - simple and complex. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate. Starch and fiber carbohydrates are complex. Protein. Protein helps your body build and maintain muscle and other tissues. They also work on the production of hormones. Like carbohydrates, most proteins are stored as fats. Animals and vegetables are the two main types of protein. Too much animal protein can cause high cholesterol, as it is high in saturated fat. Fat. Strange as it may seem; Fat is another nutrient your body needs. It comes with both full and incomplete forms. Saturated fat puts you at risk for health problems. Empty fats are healthy, but if they go through any kind of refining process, they can be full fat. Vitamins. These are also essential nutrients. Different vitamins perform different functions in the body. They can work with metabolism to help with energy levels in any imaginary activity that your body needs to perform. It has also been suggested that certain vitamins can prevent infections. For example, vitamins A, C, and E, also called antioxidants, can help prevent coronary artery disease by keeping the formation of abnormalities in the arteries. Vitamin B-1 is needed for digestion and for the functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B-2 is essential for normal cell growth. Vitamin B-3 helps eliminate toxins from your body. Folic acid helps to produce red blood cells. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium. Vitamin K helps your blood to thicken. Minerals and trace elements. This is another nutrient your body needs. Both are used in "many" different body processes. Minerals like chlorine help make your digestive juices. Phosphorus helps build strong bones. Both can be found in the food we eat, but with the trace element, your body needs just a small amount. Salt is the last nutrient your body needs. You should not eat more than, 2400 milligrams a day, however, as it may increase your blood pressure. You need to follow several guidelines to create a balanced, nutritious diet. First, try to eat two and a half cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit each day. When choosing each day, make sure you choose the right variety. A good guide is to eat as "many" different colors as you can, this will help you to choose from all five vegetable pieces at least four times a week. You should consume at least three ounces of cereal product each day. At least half of your grain diet should be whole grains. Milk should also be part of a healthy diet. Eat at least forty-eight ounces of low-fat milk or dairy products daily. Your total fat should be between 30 and 30 percent of your calories. Most of the fat you eat should be saturated fat, as saturated fat can do a lot to damage your health. Meat, poultry, dried beans, and milk or dairy products should all be fat-free, low-fat, or fat-free. Less than 10 percent of your calories should come from saturated fats, and you should always try to avoid trans-fatty acids. Fiber-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains should be a regular part of your diet, as they should be high in potassium-rich foods. Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation. Good nutrition is the basis of a healthy diet.
