I always encourage self-care as a first step in preventing and treating health challenges. When it comes to breastfeeding, the importance of self-care is a message I can always share enough. It's exciting to see pink ribbons everywhere in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! If I had my wish, every pink ribbon would carry an extra important message for women.
The message would read, "You can improve your breast health and reduce your risk of breast cancer right now with a few simple lifestyle changes."
We may not be able to control our environment or our genetic predisposition - it is true. However, a growing body of research shows that women can really make a difference in their breast health through diet, exercise, and weight control.
These simple steps can help improve your body's hormonal balance and reduce your risk of breast cancer, and provide extra health, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
We must emphasize that everyone must focus on what we can control and not on what we cannot do.
- We can test our hormone levels by saliva test. The best way for pre- and postmenopausal women to know that their bodies have an imbalance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone is to test saliva. Saliva testing is the most accurate and simple way of doing this.
- We can use the same bio hormones if we need hormone supplementation. Bio Identical states that the formation of hormone cells is similar to the hormones produced by our bodies, in contrast to Pregnant Mare's natural urine in horses and not humans.
- We can change our habits: reduce alcohol consumption and quit smoking.
- We can control our weight and exercise daily. Studies also show that maintaining a healthy, moderate weight is equally important in influencing estrogen / progesterone levels. Regular exercise is just as important. On the other hand, obesity, high insulin levels, alcohol consumption, smoking, oral contraceptives, hormones and meat products, pesticides, and pesticides can change the rate to the wrong side.
- We can eat a balanced diet by choosing to eat organic to avoid pesticides, pesticides, and estrogens in meat and dairy products. Add one to three calciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage in your diet each day. Studies show that Indole 3 Carbinol is an active ingredient that helps balance estrogen levels.
- We can wisely supplement with EFA, essential fatty acids and use fruit and vegetable concentrate if you do not eat 5 - 8 fruits and vegetables daily.
- We can do BSE's- breast self exercises to get acquainted with our bodies
- We can have better knowledge - read Dr. John Lee's "What Your Doctor Can Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" as a start.
Eating a healthy diet might decrease your risk of some types of cancer, as well as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. For example, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have a reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses on mostly on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. People who follow the Mediterranean diet choose healthy fats, such as olive oil, over butter and eat fish instead of red meat.
